Carly & Romi's Winnipeg Wedding

“crazy, fun, colorful, party”

Congratulations on your wedding! What made you decide on having your wedding with us at Fairmont?

Large venue
Beautiful banquet ballroom
Location (center/downtown and so easy to access)

Where did you have your ceremony?

Indian- Hindu Temple on St Anne’s
Civil ceremony- University of Winnipeg, Convocation Hall

We combined both our backgrounds and had a traditional Indian ceremony and the regular civil ceremony.

Tell us about the flowers you chose. Did you go traditional or contemporary?

Indian ceremony: We had dark purple/maroon colored flowers similar to the Mum's to blend well with my gold and maroon Indian bridal lengha.

Civil ceremony: We kept it simple but elegant with all white roses and the stems wrapped with gold ribbon

Tell us about the meal you served your guests. What type and flavor cake did you have at your reception?

Dinner was a buffet of delicious Indian food including butter chicken, lamb Roganjosh, chicken akbari and other Indian dishes.

Instead of a traditional cake, we did a cupcake stand with a small 6 inch cake at the top so that we could cut it for photos. Cupcake flavors included salted caramel, coconut and vanilla.

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Tell us about it.

We are children at heart so we decided to head over to Florida and stay at a resort at Disney World. Our honeymoon included three days at Disney World visiting all the parks as well as spending an entire day at Universal Studios. Our evenings were usually spent hanging out at Downtown Disney enjoying the outdoor atmosphere and entertainment. If we weren’t visiting a theme park you could find us hanging out by the pool. The weather was beautiful!!!

What element(s) did you add to make the wedding uniquely 'yours'?

We tried to make it entertaining for everyone by having 2 dance performances put on by family members. We also had the Winnipeg Bhangra Club put on a high-intensity, super entertaining performance that everyone enjoyed. Because this was a culturally combined wedding we didn’t want to lean too far one way or the other so we tried to mix aspects of both mine and his cultures together. For example, I’m used to having a reception include a father-daughter dance as well as a first bride and groom dance so we did that as well as adding the Indian aspects with the dance performances.

Another integral part of the day is the wedding dress! Tell us about what you chose to wear. Did you follow the old English saying "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue"?

My dress was pretty simple; it was an Ivory strapless mermaid gown. It had no beadingg or Décor to it so I had a beaded belt added to it. My "something old" was a hairpin from my grandma. My "something new" was obviously my dress and shoes. My "something borrowed" was my veil as my sister and I both used it for our weddings and my "something blue" was my engagement ring which had blue sapphires in it.

What was the first song you danced to as newlyweds?

Our first dance from the ground up by Dan + Shay. I love country music so when I heard this song I knew it was perfect. It talked about building a love and relationship and where it could take us through having a family in the future and it just seemed to be a perfect fit for a first dance song.

Now that you are married and have had time to reflect on your wedding day, what was your favorite moment?

It went by in a blink of an eye. All the stress and all the work all for just a few hours and then it was done. It seems surreal. Overall the reception was the best part! We kept the party going far longer than I thought it would and probably longer than the staff thought it was going to go but everyone still talks about how we had the best party they’d ever been to at a wedding. It was such a great time I wish we could do that part over again.
